The vibrations create microscopic gas bubbles that form and collapse in a fraction of a second \u2013 this is cavitation. Each collapse releases a tiny burst of energy that loosens dead skin cells, excess sebum, dirt and some of the bacteria on the surface, a little like thousands of miniature brooms sweeping the skin clean. At the same time, the vibration works as a light massage: it can temporarily boost blood flow to the skin and helps dislodge build-up from the pores. Microdermabrasion is mechanical: a diamond tip or corundum crystals physically abrade the top layer of skin, usually combined with vacuum suction. The effect is stronger, but it can irritate the skin and needs recovery time. An ultrasonic skin scrubber lifts dead cells with sound waves and water \u2013 more gently and only on the surface. Microdermabrasion works better for thicker, less sensitive skin with marked pigmentation or scarring. Regular sessions support the skin\u2019s natural renewal and can help it look brighter and more even in tone. Pores also look smaller once they are cleared of sebum and debris \u2013 although their actual size is genetically determined and no device can permanently shrink them. Cleanse your face thoroughly with a gentle gel cleanser \u2013 without any mechanical exfoliation beforehand \u2013 then dampen your skin with a cotton pad soaked in water. Hold the disinfected spatula at an angle of about 45 degrees and glide it smoothly from the centre of your face outwards and upwards. Keep your skin damp the whole time: water is what allows the ultrasonic waves to work. Over areas with blackheads, such as the nose and chin, move more slowly rather than pressing harder, and don\u2019t go over the same spot again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important: the device should glide over your skin \u2013 lightly and smoothly. Rubbing or scraping the skin with the spatula is a mistake. Ultrasonic exfoliation isn\u2019t about abrasion; it\u2019s the sound waves that do the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A facial treatment should take 15\u201320 minutes. Afterwards, rinse your skin, pat on a toner, then apply a serum and a moisturiser or a nourishing mask. Toner won\u2019t \u2018close\u2019 your pores, by the way \u2013 pores have no muscles, so they can\u2019t open or close. What toner does is refresh the skin and prepare it for the next steps. Finally, rinse and disinfect the spatula so it\u2019s clean for next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-often-should-you-use-an-ultrasonic-skin-scrubber\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How often should you use an ultrasonic skin scrubber?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start with one session every two weeks and watch how your skin responds. If it tolerates the treatment well, you can increase to once a week \u2013 that\u2019s the maximum for at-home use. More is not better: using a skin scrubber too often or pressing too hard can irritate your skin and weaken its barrier, especially if you also use acids or retinoids. Tightness, stinging, flaking or redness that doesn\u2019t settle within a day or two are signs to take a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-choose-an-ultrasonic-skin-scrubber\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to choose an ultrasonic skin scrubber<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In shops you\u2019ll find these devices sold as a skin spatula, pore scraper or ultrasonic face scrubber \u2013 they all work on the same principle. When choosing one for home use, the key parameters are the frequency of the ultrasonic vibrations, ideally between 25 and 30 kHz, and the power source: a rechargeable battery or mains power. One kilohertz means a thousand vibrations per second, so 28 kHz is 28,000 vibrations every second. If a description promises \u201828,000 vibrations per minute\u2019, treat it with caution \u2013 that would be far below the ultrasonic range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The device\u2019s power (usually around 10 W) matters less than the quality of the spatula. It should be made of stainless steel or aluminium, easy to disinfect and comfortable to glide over the skin. It\u2019s also worth checking whether the device lets you adjust the intensity and offers several modes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many devices come with extra modes: ion+ and ion\u2212 (described as \u2018extract\u2019 and \u2018infuse\u2019), EMS microcurrent or a sonophoresis mode for serums. They are a nice addition, but not essential. At the low power of home devices, the infusion modes mainly help spread your serum evenly, and EMS is a different technology that only works on the skin temporarily. Some models also heat the spatula. Warmth softens sebum, which makes blackheads easier to loosen, but it doesn\u2019t \u2018open\u2019 the pores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"ultrasound-facial-salon-vs-home\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ultrasound facial in a salon vs at home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professional salon devices are more powerful and precise, and a beauty therapist can tailor the settings to your skin type. In a salon, an ultrasonic facial can also be combined with sonophoresis, iontophoresis, needle-free mesotherapy or a chemical peel, which can enhance the results. A home device works more gently, but its advantage is that you can use it regularly \u2013 and regularity is what shapes the condition of your skin in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"skincare-after-an-ultrasonic-skin-scrubber\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skincare after an ultrasonic skin scrubber treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After ultrasonic exfoliation your skin absorbs products more readily, but it\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/alexandrakubas.com\/en\/how-to-repair-skin-barrier\/\">more sensitive<\/a> to external factors. Use hydrating products to keep irritation at bay, and apply a <a href=\"https:\/\/alexandrakubas.com\/en\/mineral-vs-chemical-sunscreen\/\">sunscreen with SPF 50<\/a> every morning. The treatment removes part of the protective layer of dead skin cells, so your skin is more vulnerable to UV. Avoid strong sun, sunbeds and harsh cleansers, and wait a few days before going back to strong acids or retinol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-and-contraindications\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ultrasonic skin scrubber side effects and contraindications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contraindications fall into two groups: permanent and temporary. Permanent ones rule the treatment out altogether: cancer, a pacemaker and metal implants in the treatment area. Temporary ones \u2013 pregnancy, fever, active skin inflammation, sunburn, and broken or healing skin \u2013 mean you should wait until the skin or your health has recovered. If you have a thyroid condition or circulatory problems, talk to your doctor before using an ultrasonic device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Straight after the treatment, you may notice slight redness, which fades on its own within 1\u20132 days. When the device is used correctly, this is the only typical side effect \u2013 ultrasonic exfoliation is well tolerated by the vast majority of skin types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
