Active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C and niacinamide promise impressive results – from softening the look of wrinkles to fading dark spots. But that easy access has a flip side. In the rush for fast results, more and more of us reach for concentrations that are simply too high, or layer ingredients in ways that end in irritation, dryness and a damaged skin barrier.

So can you use retinol and vitamin C together – and where does niacinamide fit in? As a cosmetic scientist, I want to show you how to use retinol, vitamin C and niacinamide wisely, from the absolute basics to more advanced combinations. But before you add any strong active to your routine, there’s one thing you need to know: no serum, however expensive, will work if your skin barrier is in ruins.

Have a question about your own skin? And that condition depends above all on the hydrolipid barrier – an invisible shield on the surface of the skin, made up of sebum, sweat and lipids. It stops your skin losing water and protects it from harmful external factors. When it’s damaged, skin becomes dry, tight, red and prone to irritation. If you’d like to go deeper, read my article How to Care for Your Skin’s Hydrolipid Barrier.

A healthy barrier rests on two pillars:

Hydration and repair. Your skin needs to be soothed and replenished with ingredients that help it rebuild. If your skin is irritated, or you’ve just had an aesthetic treatment, this step is absolutely essential. Rich occlusive creams that work like a soothing dressing are ideal here. One example is Cream. Its water-free formula, rich in organic butters and oils, forms a nourishing film on the skin. Its job is to support the skin’s natural protective layer. It works like a ‘shield beneath the shield’, hydrating, nourishing and soothing straight away. The oils it contains supply essential fatty acids, including linoleic acid, which improve the integrity of the skin barrier and help keep sebum production in balance. Cream’s results have been measured, too: in an instrumental test, after four weeks of regular use, skin hydration increased by an average of 35% and smoothness improved by an average of 11%.

Sun protection. This pillar is non-negotiable. Using actives without daily high protection (SPF 50) isn’t just pointless – it can do real harm. Retinol and exfoliating acids make skin more sensitive to UV, and unprotected skin responds with dark spots and faster photoageing.

Retinol, Vitamin C and Niacinamide: What Each One Does

Once your hydrolipid barrier is in good shape, you can start bringing in your ‘specialists’ – one at a time and with intention. Then active ingredients have a real chance to do their job, without irritation.

Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid and Its Derivatives)

How it works: vitamin C is an antioxidant. Its main job is to neutralise free radicals generated by UV radiation and pollution. It also stimulates collagen synthesis, which shows in firmer-looking skin, and it evens out skin tone by slowing down melanin production.

Concentrations: pure L-ascorbic acid is most effective at 10–20%, but it can be irritating. Modern, stable derivatives such as ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate (also listed as tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate) are much gentler and ideal if your skin is sensitive. They also work very well at lower concentrations.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a true multitasker. It strengthens the hydrolipid barrier and plays a part in ceramide synthesis. At the same time, it helps regulate sebum and reduces the visibility of pores. Its strong anti-inflammatory properties make it invaluable for acne-prone skin and help calm inflamed-looking skin. It also helps fade dark spots, including post-inflammatory marks. And it’s well tolerated by redness-prone, rosacea-prone skin. Clinical studies have shown that niacinamide formulations help lighten hyperpigmentation: niacinamide reduces the transfer of pigment (melanosomes) from melanocytes to the surrounding skin cells.

Concentrations: niacinamide is effective from as little as 2–5%. That’s the range worth sticking to: higher strengths (10% and above), however popular, don’t always mean better results and can leave skin red.

Retinol: The Gold Standard – and Its Limits

Retinol is the best-researched and most effective active ingredient we have – a true ‘gold standard’ in dermatology. It acts like a smart messenger, ‘telling’ skin cells to behave like younger, healthier versions of themselves. It significantly speeds up epidermal renewal, thickens the dermis and strongly stimulates collagen and elastin production.

Concentrations and the new EU rules: that remarkable effectiveness comes at a price, and the price is its potential to irritate. Because of how potent retinol is, and to protect consumers overall, the European Union has decided to regulate its use precisely. Under the latest rules (Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/996), strict concentration limits now apply to retinol and its esters (retinyl acetate and retinyl palmitate). The maximum in face and hand products is 0.3% (expressed as retinol), and in body lotions 0.05%.

Why Has the EU Capped Retinol?

The aim isn’t to make anyone afraid of retinol. It’s a preventive measure to manage our total exposure to vitamin A, which we also get from food and supplements. The point is to keep the sum of vitamin A from all sources within safe limits.

Why Do You Still See Stronger Products?

Importantly, the changes are being phased in, so for a while you may still come across products with higher concentrations. Since November 2025, manufacturers have not been allowed to place new non-compliant products on the EU market, and by May 2027 every product on the shelves must comply. This transition period gives the industry time to reformulate. Outside the EU, the rules can differ, so wherever you buy your skincare, check the label for the retinol concentration.

Why Professional Guidance Matters

Does this mean stronger retinoids are completely out of reach? No – but they belong under expert supervision. Which brings us to a fundamental rule: high-strength retinoids are best used under the guidance of a dermatologist or an experienced skin professional. Working with someone like this means you get the right strength, the right frequency and the right supporting products (repairing and hydrating) to genuinely improve your skin, rather than irritating it and causing lasting damage to its protective barrier. Remember: a poorly managed retinol routine can do more harm than good.

Retinol for Beginners: How to Start

If you’re just starting out, the rule never changes: begin with a low concentration (0.2–0.3%) and build tolerance slowly. Apply a pea-sized amount for the whole face, on completely dry skin, two or three nights a week. If your skin is reactive, use the sandwich method: a layer of moisturiser, then retinol, then moisturiser again. Make intensive repair and high SPF the foundation of your routine, and before your first full application, do a patch test.

In the first few weeks, mild dryness, slight flaking and a feeling of tightness are normal. Persistent burning, redness that doesn’t settle or swelling are not. If you notice them, stop retinol for a few days, focus on gentle cleansing and repair, then come back at a lower frequency.

One more thing: retinol isn’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If that’s you, see my guide to pregnancy-safe skincare.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) – Skin Benefits, Properties and How to Use It in Skincare

Niacinamide strengthens the hydrolipid barrier and regulates sebum at the same time. Yes – in the evening, they’re an ideal match. Niacinamide soothes the irritation retinol can cause and strengthens the skin barrier, so your skin copes better with the retinoid. Apply the lighter texture first, then the richer one, and finish with moisturiser.

Can You Use Niacinamide and Vitamin C Together?

Yes. The belief that niacinamide and vitamin C cancel each other out is one of the most persistent skincare myths. It comes from old laboratory studies on pure ingredients in solution: at high temperatures, niacinamide could partly convert into nicotinic acid (niacin), which can cause temporary flushing, and the two ingredients formed a yellowish complex. Neither applies to how you use skincare at home. At room temperature, conversion to niacin is negligible, and the complex is reversible, so both ingredients still work. In practice, niacinamide and vitamin C complement each other well: both help even out skin tone, and niacinamide also supports the barrier. If you use vitamin C as pure L-ascorbic acid and your skin is reactive, apply it first, wait a moment, then apply niacinamide – or simply use niacinamide in the evening.

Can You Use Retinol and Vitamin C Together?

Yes – just not at the same time. The safest way to use retinol and vitamin C is to split them: vitamin C in the morning, retinol in the evening. Both are strong actives, and layering them on top of each other is a fast track to irritation, especially when vitamin C is pure L-ascorbic acid. On top of that, L-ascorbic acid needs a low pH to stay stable, while retinol is formulated in a different pH range. Splitting them also makes sense for how they work: vitamin C protects against free radicals during the day and boosts your sunscreen’s protection, while retinol does its work overnight – and that’s also when it isn’t exposed to sunlight.

What Not to Mix with Retinol: AHA, BHA and Glycolic Acid

Retinol combined with exfoliating acids – AHAs such as glycolic acid, or BHA (salicylic acid) – is a pairing only for very experienced, resilient skin. For most people, it will be too irritating. The usual advice is to use them on different days of the week. I’d go one step further and recommend a month-long course of one product, then the other. Your skin needs time to recover.

Good companions for every active: whatever you use, hyaluronic acid and ceramides fit into your routine – retinol and hyaluronic acid are a particularly good pairing. Hydration is the foundation of every routine with actives.

Coenzyme Q10: A Retinol Alternative for Sensitive Skin

What if your skin is too sensitive for retinol and vitamin C irritates it? Does that mean giving up on active anti-ageing skincare? Absolutely not. This is where my favourite active ingredient comes in: coenzyme Q10, an ingredient that is both powerful and remarkably gentle on the skin.

Its role is twofold. It’s an elite antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress, and it’s a key player in producing cellular energy (ATP), which powers every repair process in the skin.

Backed by Research – Concentration Matters

The effects of coenzyme Q10 aren’t just theory. One key study, published in the journal BioFactors, showed that regular use of a cream with 0.3% coenzyme Q10 for six months reduced wrinkle depth by as much as 27%.

That shows how much potential this ingredient has – and we decided to go a step further. We wondered what could be achieved if we not only significantly increased the concentration, but also surrounded coenzyme Q10 with other ingredients that support it.

That’s how our Serum + Q10 was born, with 1% coenzyme Q10 – more than three times the 0.3% used in that study. The results exceeded our expectations. In an instrumental test commissioned from an independent laboratory, the serum reduced wrinkle size by an average of 18.2% in just six weeks.

Where do such fast results come from? It’s not only the higher concentration of the active. In conscious skincare, synergy and care for the foundations are key. That’s why in our serum we combined CoQ10 with a blend of pure, unrefined oils rich in omega fatty acids and vitamins, which also nourish the skin. Crucially, the whole formula is hypoallergenic and designed to support the natural hydrolipid barrier rather than weaken it. Proof that intensive anti-wrinkle action can go hand in hand with the highest level of safety.

CoQ10 also helps slow down melanin production and supports cellular metabolism, which helps fade the look of dark spots and supports skin repair. It may also improve the look and texture of fresh acne marks. A truly versatile ingredient for the most demanding skin.

Discover Pure Raw Rich
