There are three types, but only two of them – UVA and UVB – reach the Earth’s surface and matter for your skin (UVC is absorbed by the ozone layer).

UVB – ‘B’ for burning

UVB has a shorter wavelength and works mainly in the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. It’s behind what you see and feel straight after sun exposure: a tan (your skin’s defence response), but also painful sunburn and redness. It’s strongest in summer, around midday. Most importantly, UVB is the main cause of DNA damage in skin cells – damage that can ultimately lead to skin cancer, including melanoma.

UVA – ‘A’ for ageing

UVA has a longer wavelength and is far more insidious. It’s less intense than UVB but penetrates much deeper, right down to the dermis. There it generates large amounts of free radicals – unstable molecules that trigger oxidative stress and break down collagen and elastin, the proteins that form your skin’s scaffolding. UVA is present all year round, whatever the weather. It passes through clouds and glass, so you’re exposed in the car or sitting by an office window too. That’s why daily SPF matters even on a grey British day.

Why protect your skin so carefully? Because sun damage is cumulative, and it’s a question of health, not just appearance. Every unprotected exposure, however short, adds to it. Over time, this leads to:

Photoageing – premature skin ageing. UV exposure is estimated to cause up to 80% of the visible signs of facial ageing, and UVA is the main driver. It shows up as deep wrinkles, loss of firmness, thicker, rougher skin texture and telangiectasia (permanently dilated blood vessels).

Pigmentation – sun spots, melasma and uneven skin tone, caused by disrupted activity of melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment.

Skin cancer – the most serious risk. Every sunburn, especially in childhood, raises the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers later in life.

Weaker skin immunity – UV suppresses the skin’s natural defences (immunosuppression), making it more prone to infections, viruses such as cold sores, and other problems.

What does SPF mean?

Every sunscreen has an SPF on the label. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor – but what does it actually tell you?

SPF measures protection mainly against UVB, the rays that cause sunburn. The number (15, 30, 50) shows how much longer, in theory, you could stay in the sun before burning compared with unprotected skin. For example, if your skin turns red after 10 minutes, SPF 30 should stretch that to 30 times longer – 300 minutes.

The key word is ‘in theory’. That calculation only holds in a laboratory. In real life, sunscreen rubs off, and sweat and water wear it down. Above all, protection depends on how much you apply, and most people apply far too little. So whatever the SPF, reapply at least every two hours – and don’t treat sunscreen as a reason to stay in the sun longer than you would without it.

SPF 30 vs SPF 50

Protection doesn’t rise in a straight line. SPF 30 blocks around 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 around 98%. The difference is small, but it can matter if you have very fair skin, burn easily or are spending long hours outdoors. For everyday use, SPF 30 is the minimum; in summer or with fair skin, SPF 50 is the safer choice.

UVA protection: broad spectrum, the UVA circle and the UK star rating

Remember that SPF tells you nothing about UVA protection. That’s why you should always check the label for one of these:

Broad spectrum – the product protects against both UVA and UVB.

UVA in a circle – the product meets the EU standard, which requires UVA protection to be at least one third of the SPF.

UVA star rating – a system used on many UK sunscreens, shown as up to 5 stars. The stars show how much UVA protection a product gives in relation to its UVB protection, so the more stars, the more balanced the protection. The NHS recommends choosing a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and at least 4-star UVA protection.

Mineral vs chemical sunscreen: how UV filters actually work

To choose a sunscreen with confidence, it helps to understand how it works. UV filters fall into two families, commonly called chemical and mineral (or physical). Strictly speaking, both are chemicals – everything is. The more accurate terms are organic and inorganic filters. The real difference between them isn’t what most people think, so let’s look at each in turn.

Chemical (organic) filters

Organic filters work like a microscopic sponge. They absorb the energy of UV rays and release it as a tiny amount of heat that disperses from the skin. Because they dissolve in the formula, they give light, transparent textures that disappear on the skin and layer easily with other products. Their downside is a higher potential for irritation in very sensitive skin.

Mineral (inorganic) filters: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide

There are only two mineral filters: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Unlike organic filters, they don’t dissolve – they stay on the skin as fine particles, forming a thin protective layer. They are inert minerals with very low allergy potential, which gives them an exceptionally high safety profile. For years, their drawback was a white cast. Modern micronisation has largely solved this, making mineral formulas far more cosmetically elegant.

Do mineral sunscreens really reflect UV?

You’ll often read that physical sunscreens act like a mirror, bouncing UV rays off the skin, while chemical ones absorb them. It’s one of the most repeated claims about sunscreen – and it isn’t accurate. Research has shown that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide reflect or scatter only around 4–5% of UV radiation. They absorb the remaining 95%, exactly like organic filters.

So the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen isn’t how they stop UV. It’s that mineral filters are insoluble particles that sit on the surface, while organic filters are dissolved in the formula. That’s what explains the different textures, finishes and how well each type is tolerated by sensitive skin.

Seasonal Skincare Guide: How to Adapt Your Routine for All 4 Seasons

How to care for your skin in winter, spring, summer and autumn? Myth vs fact

This is probably the hottest topic of all – and the biggest source of anxiety.

The myth: ‘Chemical sunscreen gets into your bloodstream and poisons your body.’

The facts: Your skin – specifically its outermost layer, the stratum corneum – is a remarkably effective barrier. Studies, including those run by the US FDA, have shown that trace amounts of some organic filters can be detected in the blood after repeated application over large areas of the body. But here’s the conclusion that often gets left out: being detectable is not the same as being toxic.

Oxybenzone and hormones

What about reports that sunscreen disrupts hormones? It’s part of the same debate. Some organic filters, particularly older ones such as oxybenzone (benzophenone-3), have been studied as potential endocrine disruptors.

These studies need to be seen in context. Most of the alarming results come from in vitro (lab) studies or from animals given extremely high doses – far beyond anything you could reach by applying sunscreen to your skin. One analysis calculated that to reach the levels given to rats in a well-known study, a person would need to apply sunscreen containing oxybenzone every day for 277 years.

In Europe, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) continuously reviews the evidence, and in the UK this role falls to the Scientific Advisory Group on Chemical Safety (SAG-CS). Their position is clear: approved UV filters, including those under discussion, are safe in cosmetics at the permitted concentrations. Oxybenzone limits have been tightened as a precaution – in the EU to a maximum of 6% in face products and 2.2% in body products – and the UK is aligning with these limits. The potential risk is theoretical and unproven under real-life use, while the risk from UV radiation is undeniable and very real. The benefits of protecting yourself from skin cancer and photoageing far outweigh a purely theoretical risk.

Are nanoparticles in sunscreen safe?

Another popular scare story: ‘Nanoparticles in mineral sunscreens are dangerous because they get into your cells and cause disease.’

The technology behind it is simple. Nano-sized zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are used for one reason – to make the cream easier to apply and get rid of the white cast. Are they dangerous? Based on current scientific knowledge, no. In cosmetic formulas, nanoparticles tend to agglomerate, clumping together into larger clusters. These clusters are too big to pass through healthy, intact skin.

The SCCS confirms this: in its official opinions, it considers nano forms of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide safe for use on the skin in creams and lotions. EU and UK rules also don’t allow these nano forms in products that could be inhaled, so you won’t find them in sprays.

Sunscreen for sensitive skin: which filter to choose

This is a very practical question. Allergic reactions and irritation from sunscreen aren’t common, but they do happen – and statistically, organic (chemical) filters cause them more often. That’s why, for sensitive, reactive or atopic skin, skin prone to eczema or rosacea, and for children, mineral sunscreen is the gold standard and the safest choice. Zinc oxide also has soothing, calming properties, which makes it an ideal ingredient for problem skin.

If you think you’re reacting to a sunscreen, check the ingredient list for the usual suspects first – fragrance (parfum) is often to blame rather than the UV filter itself. You’ll find more on choosing gentle formulas in my guide to hypoallergenic skincare for sensitive skin.

When looking for the right product, pharmacy skincare brands that specialise in sensitive skin are a good place to start – for example La Roche-Posay, Avène, SVR or Bioderma. They offer advanced formulas, often based on mineral filters or very gentle, modern organic filters.

Sunscreen for babies and children

A child’s skin isn’t a miniature version of adult skin. It’s much thinner and more delicate, and its natural protective layer – the hydrolipid barrier – isn’t yet fully developed. This makes it more permeable to substances applied to it and more prone to irritation. On top of that, a child’s melanin production – the natural pigment that helps protect against the sun – isn’t as efficient. As a result, children burn much more easily, and sunburn is far more dangerous for them: every burn in childhood significantly increases the risk of melanoma in adult life.

Which sunscreen for children? Choose mineral

Because of all this, many dermatologists and paediatricians recommend mineral sunscreen for babies and young children – products based on zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They work on the surface of the skin and have very low allergy potential. Look for these two names high up in the ingredient list (INCI), and avoid organic filters, fragrance (parfum) and colourants. The shorter and simpler the formula, the better. In the UK, the NHS advises at least SPF 30 for children, and a 4- or 5-star UVA rating is a good benchmark.

Babies under 6 months – the most important rule

Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight. Their skin is too immature for strong sun, so the basis of protection is shade, light, loose clothing with long sleeves and legs, and a sun hat – not sunscreen.

Practical tips

Apply sunscreen generously about 30 minutes before going outside, and again just before you head out.

Don’t forget the ears, the back of the neck, hands and feet.

Reapply every 2 hours, and always after swimming or towel drying – even if the sunscreen is water resistant.

In the UK, keep children in the shade between 11am and 3pm from March to October.

Remember that sunscreen is the last line of defence. Always look for shade and cover up with clothing first.

Prep your skin first

Before you reach for your sunscreen, make sure your skin is well prepared. Even the best sunscreen works and looks better on a good base. Before applying UV protection – especially if your skin is dry or sensitive – it’s worth using a moisturiser that strengthens your skin barrier and keeps your skin comfortable all day. This creates a solid foundation, so the sunscreen on top not only protects better but also doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight.

Cream is ideal for this. Its water-free formula, rich in organic shea and cocoa butters, leaves a nourishing, protective film on the skin. Think of it as a ‘shield beneath the shield’: first, Cream nourishes and soothes, creating a smooth base and supporting your skin’s natural barrier function and self-regeneration – then your sunscreen provides full protection against UV radiation. It’s the perfect duo for dry, sensitive and mature skin, keeping it comfortable without that tight feeling.

Discover Pure Raw Rich filters, approved by regulators, are safe – and they’re your skin’s greatest ally. Sunscreen is, without question, the most important anti-ageing product there is, with scientifically proven effectiveness.

Choosing between chemical and mineral sunscreen is a personal decision. Don’t be afraid of modern organic filters: they often offer very high UVA protection in remarkably light, comfortable formulas. But if your skin is sensitive or reactive, or you simply prefer minimalist formulas, mineral filters will always be a reliable, excellent choice. And there’s no need to worry about nanoparticles in creams either – their safety has been confirmed by scientific bodies, and their tendency to clump together stops them from penetrating healthy skin.

I know that finding the right sunscreen often takes trial and error. As a cosmetic scientist, I’ve tested dozens of products, and I have my favourites – ones that combine effective broad-spectrum protection with a clean formula and real comfort. Here are the sunscreens I trust and can recommend with a clear conscience:

Laboratoires de Biarritz tinted face cream SPF 50. This is my favourite – I’ve used it every day for several years and have no wish to switch. It protects against UVA, UVB and, according to the brand, blue light. It leaves a subtle tint on the skin, but it isn’t make-up. The whole family can use it (as mine does), and it works beautifully with our skincare. It leaves a satin finish. It contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (nano), so there’s no white cast, plus rice powder and silica, which give it that satin finish. It comes in three shades.

Acorelle organic sun spray SPF 50 for face and body. This is what I use on my body when I spend time in full sun (which I usually avoid). It leaves a slight white sheen on the skin – which doesn’t bother me at all and doesn’t look bad – and stays on very well. It’s water resistant and only comes off with soap or a cleansing gel. It’s suitable for the whole family, including sensitive skin. It protects against UVA, UVB and, according to the brand, blue light, and it doesn’t dry the skin.

Laboratoires de Biarritz invisible sun oil SPF 50, 3-in-1 for face, body and hair. It’s based on a blend of organic (chemical) filters and protects against UVA and UVB. It isn’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children under 3.

Always check the ingredient list (INCI) and choose formulas without unnecessary fragrance or potential allergens. These, rather than the UV filter itself, are often behind irritation, and some fragrance allergens can penetrate the skin. Generous application is just as important – the popular two-finger rule for the face and neck – as is reapplying every two hours, and always after swimming or towel drying.

Aleksandra Kubas-Maliszewska

Free email consultation

Not sure how to protect your skin from the sun? Research shows that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide reflect or scatter just 4–5% of UV radiation and absorb the remaining 95%. The idea that mineral sunscreens act like a mirror is a long-standing myth.

What exactly do UV filters protect us from, and why is UVA so dangerous?
UV filters protect your skin cells from the harmful effects of UV radiation. While UVB tans and burns the skin’s surface, UVA is more insidious because it penetrates deep into the skin. There, it breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to premature ageing – and, more importantly, it also contributes to skin cancer. That’s why broad-spectrum protection is so important.

What SPF is enough for everyday use?
SPF 30 is the minimum for everyday use, even on cloudy days. For fuller protection – especially in summer or if you have fair skin – SPF 50 is recommended. In the UK, also look for at least 4-star UVA protection. A high SPF doesn’t mean you can skip reapplying during the day.

What does the UVA star rating mean?
The star rating, used on many UK sunscreens, shows how much UVA protection a product gives in relation to its UVB protection (SPF), on a scale of up to 5 stars. The more stars, the more balanced the protection. The NHS recommends at least 4 stars.

Why do children need extra sun protection?
A child’s skin is much thinner and more delicate than an adult’s, its protective barrier is weaker and its defence mechanisms are still immature. Sunburn in childhood dramatically increases the risk of melanoma in adult life. That’s why high mineral sun protection, shade and protective clothing are an absolute priority for children.

Are spray and powder sunscreens as effective as creams?
Sprays work well as your main protection, as long as you apply plenty and rub them in evenly – which you need to do anyway. Powders are great for topping up during the day, but for your base layer a cream or lotion gives you the most confidence that you’ve applied an even, thick enough layer to get the protection stated on the label.

Published: 23.06.2025 | Updated: 16.10.2026 | Reading time approx. 15 min. Chemical (organic) sunscreens use filters dissolved in the formula. Contrary to popular belief, both work mainly by absorbing UV radiation. The real differences lie in texture, finish and how well they’re tolerated by sensitive skin.
en-US
en-US"},{"@type":"Question","@id":"https://alexandrakubas.com/en/mineral-vs-chemical-sunscreen/#faq-question-1792137187830
{"@type":"Answer
Only a little. While UVB tans and burns the skin’s surface, UVA is more insidious because it penetrates deep into the skin. There, it breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to premature ageing – and, more importantly, it also contributes to skin cancer. For fuller protection – especially in summer or if you have fair skin – SPF 50 is recommended. In the UK, also look for at least 4-star UVA protection.
